New West Summit 2019 Celebrates as Mexico Makes Move on Marijuana Legalization

New West Summit 2019 is shaping up to be quite a celebration. Attendees to the conference, which takes place October 10-11 at the Bespoke Event Center in San Francisco, will likely be cheering as Mexico moves to legalize recreational cannabis. The summit series, now in its fifth year, provides an opportunity for professionals from the technology, media and investment sectors to swap perspectives on trends in the cannabis industry. As a result, these annual New West Summits may be the closest thing the industry has to a crystal ball.

Mexico is close to joining the ranks of Uruguay and Canada – the only two countries that have legalized adult-recreational use of cannabis nationwide. In June 2017, the Mexican legislature approved medical use of marijuana. Now, the country’s Supreme Court has given lawmakers until October 2019 to develop a regulatory plan. The court has ruled five times since 2015 that any ban on recreational marijuana is unconstitutional. Legalization, if it comes to pass, could make Mexico the big smoke of the cannabis world. While Uruguay has 3.5 million inhabitants, Canada around 37 million and California – another cannabis hot spot – about 40 million, Mexico is a nation of 129 million.

More than celebrating will be going on at New West Summit 2019, however. The event will feature 150 speakers, an investment symposium, a career fair, a hack-a-thon and some 30 sessions, each lasting about 45 minutes. The session names are delightfully thought provoking. There’s a panel discussion on the $1.4 billion cannabis beverage market titled ‘Drink Up! The Booming Infused-Cannabis Beverage Market… And Don’t Call It an Edible’, as well as ‘Hemp, Cannabis and the Black Market: A Discussion of Quality and Safety’ and ‘Vape Technology & New Directions: From Desktop to Disposables… What’s Next?’.

Speakers set to take the stage at the summit include Steve DeAngelo, Ophelia Chong and Dr. Kamal S. Kalsi, DO. DeAngelo is a co-founder and chairman emeritus of Harborside, one of the first six dispensaries licensed in the United States and now a publicly traded company on the Canadian Securities Exchange (CSE). He has been dubbed “the father of the legal industry” by former speaker of the California Assembly Willie Brown for his work promoting cannabis over four decades. DeAngelo is also a founder of Steep Hill Laboratory, the first cannabis analytics company, and the Arc View Group, the first dedicated cannabis-investment network.

Chong is the founder of Stock Pot Images, as well as Asian Americans for Cannabis Education (AACE). She is also the creative consultant at PUSH Magazine, which targets millennials interested in cannabis, and at one time she served as the community outreach liaison for THC Design, one of the premium cannabis growers in California.

Kalsi is medical director at SunFest LLC, which is seeking a vertically integrated, medicinal marijuana license in Florida. He also acts as scientific advisor to WarFighter Hemp LLC, a Colorado-based manufacturer of CBD derived from industrial hemp.
