The JBoy Show Talks with Sportswriter Woody Paige

  • Woody Paige shares memories of growing up as Elvis Presley’s neighbor
  • Tom Brady appears to be nearing end of his NFL career
  • COVID has put temporary end to tailgating

Sportswriter and ESPN’s Around the Horn host Woody Paige joined Jake Crain on The JBoy Show’s Sept. 15 episode to discuss Elvis Presley, coaches, tailgating and more.

The show began with Paige reminiscing about his childhood when he was the next-door neighbor to Elvis Presley in government housing. He used to sit on the front porch and listen to Presley play guitar, Paige shared. Once he got older, he even joined Presley occasionally to play flag football.

After providing a sneak peak into Presley’s life, the conversation turned to the NFL and Tom Brady. Even though Brady says he isn’t ready to retire, it looks as though his career is winding down. “Brady is starting to look more and more like Peyton Manning,” said Paige, who noted that Manning suffered several injuries in his last year, with recovery time taking longer and longer. “When you let people hang around too long, you are going to get beat.”

Paige’s overall summary of the NFL, which he has been covering since the 1970s, is that this will be a “wacky” season. “Guys are more prone to get hurt due to less off-season training, and the underdogs may just come out the victors this year,” he noted. “This season is entirely unpredictable.”

COVID is still a big conversation point, whether the discussion is centered on football, basketball or just about any college sport. While teams are back on the football field, a fan favorite — tailgating — has yet to be resumed. Paige shared some of his best memories of tailgating, highlighting the community and the importance of the tradition. Right now, one of the saddest aspects of the season is the loss of the tailgate, he noted. “Hopefully,” said Crain, “we will get back to normal at some point.”

Eventually, the discussion between the two men turned to the unique persona that Paige has created over the years. Paige himself described it by noting he was “that crazy uncle that comes over,” but Crain sees him differently.

“When I think of Woody Paige, I don’t just think of what you do in the newspaper and all of that,” stated Crain. “I think of you on the screen and being passionate about what you talk about. I think that resonates with a lot of people.”

Crain noted that Paige has written several books and has a new one coming out soon, available on Amazon. You can also catch him on Around the Horn or writing at The Gazette.
