One such facility, for example, is the Essex County Resource Recovery Facility that processed 2,800 tons of municipal solid waste per day in 2012 between its two generators, producing approximately 65 megawatts of energy.

While the Northeast led in terms of waste-to-energy capacity as well as estimated MRF throughput in 2014, it had, by far, the least number of landfills in the U.S., per the EPA report, potentially signifying a largely untapped market.
