Kentucky Wants to Do for Blockchain What It Did for Bourbon

Who hasn’t heard of Kentucky Bourbon? Well, soon, the same may be said of Kentucky blockchain, for the same spirit that made bourbon a household name is at work again. Run for the Unicorns, a confab on the convergence of crypto and other technologies, is set to take place April 29 to May 4, 2019, in Kentucky’s largest city, Louisville. The networking nexus is meant to explore blockchain, virtual and augmented reality and a host of other technologies that are changing the way capital works, particularly for tech startups. It is being held to coincide with the Kentucky Derby Festival, which culminates with the famous annual race on Saturday, May 4.

As is usual, the Bourbon Trail – a tour of Kentucky distilleries – will be on the cards. Kentucky is home to some 30 whisky manufacturers, of which 13 are craft distilleries. The eight-hour Bourbon Trail outing includes three exclusive distillery tours and the opportunity to have lunch with billionaires (http://nnw.fm/FKs2j).

Run for the Unicorns organizers – Convergence of 4 Dimensions – believe that the Kentucky Derby can do for Louisville what South by Southwest (“SxSW”) has done for Austin, Texas. The annual SxSW conference and festival is credited with putting Austin ahead of Silicon Valley as a cradle for tech startups.

This year’s SxSW conference ran on March 8-17 and featured Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez; Senators Amy Klobuchar, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren; Howard Schultz of Starbucks fame; Priscilla Chan, wife of Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg; Margrethe Vestager, the European Union commissioner for competition; Jeff Zucker, president of CNN Worldwide; and dozens of other powerful figures in tech, media and politics.

This year’s star-studded lineup is an indication, says Convergence CEO Andrew Prell, of the power of promotion. He believes that the Kentucky Derby, being a larger, more prestigious, world-class entertainment attraction, could have a greater impact on Louisville than SxSW has had on Austin. The Kentucky Derby can be leveraged as a backdrop for a world class Tech Expo & Conference that will turn Louisville into a city that attracts technology talent, startups and more Fortune 500 companies, showing the world, once again, that Kentucky has spirit.
