Kentucky Game Jam to be Hosted by Run for the Unicorns & University of Louisville

There’s more to Kentucky than bourbon and horse racing, even though both have put the state on the international map. On April 26-28, ‘Run19 Hacks’ will take over the Engineering Education Garage at the University of Louisville’s J. B. Speed School of Engineering for a 54-hour hackathon and eSports game jam. The event, produced by FanHacks and Convergence, is part of the annual Run For The Unicorns Expo & Conference held during Derby Week in Louisville, Kentucky (http://nnw.fm/UTeE1).

The game jam, a hackathon focused on the development of video games, is meant to be a seedbed that fosters the next generation of global e-sports apps, as well as facilitating entrepreneurship, recruitment of tech talent and deal flow. In the tech world, hackathons are short-term collaborations between computer programmers and those involved in software development that address some problem and aim to produce a solution – a website, mobile app or robot, for example – by the end of the collaboration.

Participants in the game jam will join teams of up to four to work on unique projects, which are typically focused on software development, although hardware projects are allowed. This collaborative approach could drive mass adoption of XR, AI, IoT (Internet of Things) and blockchain technologies, particularly across fan engagement and e-sports ecosystems. After 54 hours of “hacking,” teams will exhibit their projects and products. There’s a good chance that the next big thing in fan apps and e-sports will emerge. The game jam also offers unparalleled opportunities for students to get their feet through doors by building networks, as well as increasing their chances of receiving internship and job-offers from world-class sponsors and learning the tools and systems of XR, AI, IoT and blockchain technologies.

The game jam is a pre-conference event for the Run for The Unicorns Expo & Conference, a gathering of top innovators, investors and disrupters in the tech sector. The week-long funfair – running from April 29 to May 4, 2019 – is also scheduled to feature a Shark Tank casting call, a VIP investor dinner, a trip on the ‘Bourbon Trail’, a poker tournament and an outing at the Kentucky Oaks, a race for three-year-old female horses held on the eve of the Kentucky Derby. The event concludes at the Kentucky Derby, which is watched all over the world, on May 4.
