Award-Winning Filmmaker Produces Comical Film Explaining “Why I’m Not on Pokémon Go”

From the director of the award-winning documentary “Why I’m not on Facebook” comes a satirical short film that takes a look at the digital craze of Pokémon.  With more than 500 million downloads worldwide, Pokémon Go has become a “global phenomenon,” luring people of all ages to the streets – at all hours of the day – using their smartphones to locate virtual Pokémon.

Launched in July of 2016, Pokémon Go became the highest-grossing app in the U.S. within 13 hours and now has more than 20 million daily active users in the United States alone.

How does a 25-year old Japanese cartoon become the most popular app in history? And what is it about the app that attracts both the young and old to search for creatures that don’t really exist?

In “Why I’m Not on Pokémon Go,” filmmaker Brant Pinvidic sets out to answer these questions, and when his teenage daughter starts sneaking out of the house trying to “catch ‘em all,” Pokémon Go gets personal and Pinvidic must decide whether to embrace the madness or ban it from his family forever.

Pinvidic’s search for answers takes him across the country where he asks family, celebrities and Pokémon “trainers” what it is that makes the app so fascinating. Along his journey, Pinvidic interviews the first man to “catch ‘em all,” as well as visits with Dr. Drew about the phenomenon.

Leaving no stone unturned, Pinvidic even captures the absurdity of his own hunt for Pokémon. As is his style, Pinvidic’s humorous and thought-provoking tale leaves nothing unexplored – or unsaid – as he puts the best and worst of Pokemon Go on display.
