Applied Optoelectronics, Inc. (NASDAQ: AAOI), a vertically integrated provider of fiber-optic networking products, recently disclosed that it has received introductory orders for its market-leading 40 gigabits-per-second (40G) QSFP+ and 100 gigabits-per-second (100G) QSFP28 optical transceiver modules from a new hyper-scale datacenter customer.
Announcing the order, Chih-Hsiang Thompson Lin, founder and CEO of Applied Optoelectronics, commented:
“After an extensive period of product testing and qualification, we are pleased to have the opportunity to provide our industry-leading products to a new large datacenter customer. The initial orders we have received, totaling more than 10,000 transceivers of various product types, are for delivery over the next couple of quarters, and represent a compelling opportunity to develop a long-term relationship with this new customer. We believe we are the market leader within our current datacenter customers and we are excited to have the opportunity to demonstrate our capabilities to this new customer as the relationship deepens over time.”
The 40G and 100G optical transceivers manufactured by Applied Optoelectronics are gradually replacing the 10G transceivers currently in extensive use. It has been estimated that by 2019, 100G Ethernet will make up more than 50 percent of data center optical transceiver transmissions. The global optical transceiver market is expected to reach almost $10 billion by 2020.
Applied Optoelectronics’ optical transceivers have found widespread employment for high-speed switching and routing connectivity in intra-datacenter applications. The company has invested over $70 million in the last four quarters on state-of-the-art production and R&D facilities to enable cost-effective, high volume production for its datacenter and CATV broadband product lines, including in-house laser diode and light engine production.
The company is headquartered in Sugar Land, Texas, and has 2,513 employees. In addition to its corporate headquarters, wafer fabrication plant and advanced engineering and production facilities in Sugar Land, Applied Optoelectronics has engineering and manufacturing facilities in Taipei, Taiwan, and Ningbo, China. The company reported revenues for the financial year ended December 31, 2015, of $189.9 million.
