- Doering joins Jake Crain to discuss upsets as well as preview what’s to come

ESPN and SEC Network’s Chris Doering joined The JBoy Show on Sept. 28, 2020, to talk about the first week of SEC football and take a look at what’s to come. Considered the “realest SEC podcast around,” host Jake Crain welcomed listeners to the Monday edition of the show, jumping right into the upsets of week one.
“It feels like LSU loses someone important every week,” said Crain, who then listed some players the team has recently lost.
LSU, the defending champions and ranked sixth at the time, lost to Mississippi State. This game was Mark Leach’s debut, and Crain and Doering discussed whether or not that fact played to the team’s favor.
The duo also talked about Kentucky and Auburn doling up a few surprises for fans. Doering emphasized that Kentucky did not play to its potential, noting that a fake punt and a few mistakes in the second half with two turnovers seemed to turn the direction of the game.
In addition, Texas A&M played an average game against Vanderbilt, Doering continued. Fans seem to be all over the spectrum as to where they believe A&M will ultimately land. “On a day when other teams looked good offensively, Texas A&M did not have the explosive offense we’ve been hearing about,” he observed. “Vanderbilt kept it simple, shortened the game, and only lost by five.
“Heading into the season,” he continued. “I thought the teams that were going to be the best and able to weather what they’ve gone through with the shortened-off season and everything else were the teams that had continuity in the coaching staff and experience on the field.”
He continued his observations, noting that Georgia and Arkansas provided more questions than answers. He noted that Georgia needs to find its quarterback: JT Daniels or D’Wan Mathis. And finally, he observed that, while Georgia’s defense was strong, the team struggled offensively.
Doering and Crain then moved on to next week’s lineup.
“Alabama is the cream of the crop of the SEC, head and shoulders above everybody else right now,” Doering stated, opining that the Texas A&M Alabama game promises to be a good one, because A&M always seems to show up strong against Alabama. Still, Doering favors Alabama for the win.
“Georgia has the toughest four-game stretch in the SEC,” said Doering. “You look at the succession of games they play starting with Auburn this week, followed by Tennessee, Alabama, and Kentucky. That’s going to be an absolute grind for them, and that’s before I realized how many problems they had offensively as what we saw on Saturday.”
