To date, the standard of care for men and women with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has been a mix of medications, often pills, from different antiretroviral classes that hinder different steps of the HIV lifecycle. Although generally effective, the drug regimens that currently dominate the HIV treatment space also have limitations. They require daily dosing. They are linked with side-effects. They are vulnerable to drug resistance. And, in some patients, they are simply not effective.
