Dynasil Corporation of America (DYSL) Subsidiary Receives $1.86 Million in Grants from U.S. Department of Energy

In a recent news release, Dynasil Corporation of America (NASDAQ: DYSL) announced that RMD, Inc., its contract research subsidiary, has been awarded two phase II grants totaling $1.86 million under the U.S. Department of Energy’s Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. The SBIR program is designed to help domestic small businesses explore their technological potential by encouraging them to engage in federal research and development that has the potential for commercialization, while the STTR program aims to bridge the gap between performance of basic science and commercialization of resulting innovations.

Funding stemming from the award of these grants is expected to play a key role in RMD’s continuing efforts to advance detection and analysis methods for high energy physics research, as well as the detection of potential defects in concrete structures within nuclear power plants. The first grant was awarded to advance the development of the company’s eddy current technology. This technology uses magnetic solid-state sensor arrays to inspect nuclear power plant infrastructure, presenting the potential to offer more enhanced capabilities for detecting defects in components encased in concrete.

The second phase II grant awarded to RMD is for the development of ultra-pure sodium iodide scintillators in order to facilitate dark matter studies that could help determine how the galaxies were formed and whether or not the universe will continue to expand indefinitely. Dark matter research is expected to play a vital role in future research to expand understanding of the size, shape and ultimate fate of the universe in the decades to come.

“From the development of imaging devices designed to ‘see’ through the walls of nuclear power plant concrete structures to gamma-ray detectors that enable the next generation of dark matter studies, the Phase II research projects we are embarking on through these SBIR/STTR Programs embody some of the world’s most pressing high energy physics and energy production research needs,” Kanai Shah, Ph.D., president of RMD, Inc., stated in the news release. “Dynasil is proud to partner with the Department of Energy on these initiatives.”

The Department of Energy’s decision to award RMD these grants continues to build on what has been an exciting month for Dynasil shareholders. Just last week, the company’s contract research subsidiary was selected as a finalist for the R&D 100 awards, which are widely recognized in industry, government and academia as a mark of excellence for the most innovative ideas of the year. Nomination of RMD’s Multi-mode Alkaline Earth Halide Scintillator, which was developed under a grant from the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, follows similar recognition for the company’s Triplet Harvesting Plastic Scintillators, which were honored with an R&D 100 award in 2014.
