And then, start addressing the areas where you have clear gaps. With my new company, as a virtual CISO, I do this during the first 30 days of the job,” Haugli said. “Without knowing what an organization looks like, I’m going to ask questions, such as ‘how have you built your program’ and ‘what is it built to?’ I’m not talking about compliance; I’m just talking about programmatic behaviors. If you can’t answer that, then that is the starting point. You need an assessment to get a full understanding of where the organization is today, the current state, what the target state is that it should look like. That becomes your roadmap on how to get there. The easy things to say are the things that cause you the most pain.”
