NetworkNewsBreaks – Calithera Biosciences, Inc. (NASDAQ: CALA), Bristol-Myers Squibb (NYSE: BMY) Collaborate to Assess Combination of Opdivo, CB-839

Company: Calithera Biosciences, Inc. (CALA)
Category: Stock Spotlights

Calithera Biosciences (NASDAQ: CALA) and Bristol-Myers Squibb (NYSE: BMY) have entered into a clinical trial collaboration to evaluate Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Opdivo in combination with Calithera’s CB-839 in patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). Preclinical data suggest that CB-839 – currently in phase 1/2 clinical studies – may enhance the effects of, and reverse tumor resistance to checkpoint inhibitors by altering the immune-suppressive microenvironment and encouraging an anti-tumor immune response. Opdivo is designed to overcome immune suppression. Under the collaboration, Calithera and Bristol-Myers will explore the potential of combining their agents with the goal of achieving improved and continual efficacy in ccRCC patients with cancer that is stable or growing on a PD-1 inhibitor therapy. “We believe that by blocking glutamine consumption in tumors, and redirecting this key nutrient for cell growth and proliferation to T-cells, CB-839 could enhance the effects of Opdivo. With support from Bristol-Myers Squibb, Calithera is excited to advance this combination into the Phase 2 portion of CX-839-004, our ongoing study in ccRCC patients,” Calithera CEO Susan Molineaux stated in the news release.

About Calithera Biosciences

Calithera Biosciences, Inc. is a clinical-stage pharmaceutical company focused on discovering and developing novel small molecule drugs directed against tumor metabolism and tumor immunology targets for the treatment of cancer. Calithera’s lead product candidate, CB-839, is a potent, selective, reversible and orally bioavailable inhibitor of glutaminase. CB-839 takes advantage of the pronounced dependency many cancers have on the nutrient glutamine for growth and survival. It is currently being evaluated in Phase 1/2 clinical trials in combination with standard of care agents. CB-1158 is a first-in-class immuno-oncology metabolic checkpoint inhibitor targeting arginase, a critical immunosuppressive enzyme responsible for T-cell suppression by myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs). Arginase depletes arginine, a nutrient that is critical for the activation, growth and survival of the body’s cancer-fighting immune cells, known as cytotoxic T-cells. CB-1158 is currently in a Phase I clinical trial. Calithera is headquartered in South San Francisco, California.
